Meditation can be defined as the practice of observing our thoughts objectively. What if there were a computer program so powerful that it could predict our thoughts as they actually happened? Would it have the effect of raising our consciousness? What if the program could predict everyone’s thoughts, and presented them to millions of people simultaneously, via the internet? Would there be a global effect on human consciousness? This is the question explored in this novel. The original computer program was developed by an ancient civilization, for reasons revealed only later in the book, and discovered by a modern spiritual community. One of the community’s members, Aaron Petiver, is made responsible for secretly bringing the program to the U.S. and putting it into effect. However, the original computer program was devised for a far smaller population than that now existing on earth. In order to apply it to billions of individuals, Aaron needs a very powerful computer, and some equally powerful accessory software. The only computer on earth powerful enough for Aaron’s needs is made from molecular transistors. Dewey Williams, a brilliant young scientist in Eugene, Oregon, has engineered DNA molecules to synthesize nanoscale wires and junctions that allow a quantum leap in computing speed and information storage. To test the power of his biocomputer, he collaborates with an evolutionary biologist, Cristina Palade-Moran. Palade-Moran has developed a series of genetic algorithms, computer programs that evolve by natural selection. Her genetic algorithms mimic the properties of existing and extinct lifeforms, and using them, she proposes to simulate on the biocomputer the entire evolutionary history of earth. Petiver gains access to Williams’ lab by posing as a janitor, and proceeds to modify the genetic algorithms so that they do not simply simulate an evolutionary scenario, but reproduce evolution precisely. They in effect evolve to create virtual copies of every human being on earth, including all the thoughts that each person is experiencing. Along the way, Aaron must deal with an apparent attempt at industrial sabotage; a hacker working for the FBI whose help he must enlist by telling him some things, but not everything, about the program; and a key member of Williams’ research team who sees in Petiver something from a traumatic event in her childhood. When the program is finally ready to go on the internet, at a time when millions of people world-wide will be exposed to it, the moment of truth arrives. This novel thus brings together futuristic computer technology with mystical insights. It is a story of evolution, past, present, and future. Read more
